About Us

We are a curated provider of evidence-based holistic and natural remedies, food, and supplements for your companion canine.  We are committed to educating you regarding the most appropriate diet and supplementation to improve and maintain your canine’s health.

Our Vision

Our sole focus is your dog’s health, not selling our own brand of supplements and products.  Unlike testing companies that only recommend their own manufactured supplements, we remain independent and unbiased.  Instead, we analyze your dog’s unique gut microbiome and leverage rigorous research to curate the highest-quality, third-party products tailored specifically for your dog’s condition.  While we offer these carefully selected brands in our online shop for your convenience, our recommendations are always driven entirely by science and what is genuinely best for your dog.

Additionally, the products recommended are selected solely based upon their quality and relevance.  Canine Biome does not receive any financial compensation, affiliate commissions, sponsorship fees, or other payments from the companies or brands behind our recommendations.  This ensures that all of our suggestions are made independently and in the best interest of you and your dog.

Our Mission

  • To integrate natural remedies with conventional health care practices. We advocate an ecological and environmentally aware approach to the health and welfare of our pets, ourselves, and our community.
  • To provide nutritional counseling and consulting services based upon our extensive, multi-disciplined experience, background, and education. We specialize in nutritional deficiencies, microbiome testing and analysis, and various other non-blood based testing.
  • To assist you with at-home testing including GI microbiome, metal and toxic metal, ear microbiome, environmental mold and mycotoxin,  glyphosate, and skin microbiome
  • To provide proper nutrition and supplementation to enhance your dog’s health rather than relying upon pharmaceuticals and drugs which may have detrimental, long-term effects while simultaneously creating dysbiosis
  • We encourage you to share our information with your veterinary professional

Our Core Values

Our values include compassion, empathy and education.  These are the cornerstones of our work and we have taken great care in curating products and services that align with these tenets.  All of the products we carry and the tests that we aid in conducting in the comfort of your home, are of the highest quality, meticulously selected and researched.

Meet the Co-Founders

The  co-founders have extensive backgrounds and education in canine nutrition, holistic veterinary care, and rescue/adoption experience. The duo’s combined experience and knowledge are unparalleled in the pet industry.

Alanna Duffy

Alanna was raised in Cranford and attended Cranford High School graduating in the class of 2007.  Pursuing various interests between the intersections of food and culture, she went on to pursue Anthropology at the University of New Hampshire.  During her time there she studied abroad in Italy as part of the burgeoning Ecogastronomy program. Staging through Piemonte and Parma, she learned the rich cultural history of authentic Italian wines, cheeses, and prized culinary products.  A large component of the program was honoring the terroir and respecting the animals that are part of our food chain and greater ecosystem. After graduating with a BA degree in Anthropology in 2012, she fell into the world of dog walking.  It quickly became a full time venture.

In 2013, she launched Alanna’s Professional Petcare. Growing around the Cranford community, her model shifted from solo dog walks to pack walks after she rescued her dog Darla in 2015. Her pack grew by one more when Trixie joined in 2019. After years of fostering close relationships with clients and dogs, she offered nutritional guidance around dogs encountering various health issues. After facing her own health battles, nutrition would become a personal passion. Applying the same integrative approaches of health to her dogs and greater pack, she’s supported many pets through their precious time spent with us.  In 2023 she launched a biologically appropriate dog treat company, Roots & Snoots.

Eager to learn more about raw and fresh food diets for dogs, Alanna has completed various coursework.  In 2020, she became a Certified Raw Dog Food Nutrition Specialist, offered as part of Dog’s Naturally Magazine University programs.  In 2026, she completed Feed Real Institute’s program to become a Certified Professional Canine Nutritionist.

Alanna is passionate about engaging in the latest research on health and nutrition.  She continues to pursue the latest information regarding the gut microbiome, and the many factors that correspond to this ever-changing landscape.  Through her years of experience, she has witnessed many health and behavior transformations as the result of balancing  the diets of our pets.  At Canine Biome, Alanna is working to offer comprehensive guidance to support health outcomes for all life stages of dogs.

Lynne Suga-Rafanelli

Lynne was graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English. She then held various marketing, advertising and public relations positions with such world-renowned companies as Japan Airlines, The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC, The Leading Hotels of the World, Rado Watch Company, and Montblanc.

Lynne was afforded the luxury of traveling extensively throughout Europe, Asia and South America during her tenure with these companies and learning about different cultures helped shape her appreciation for working with and helping a diverse population.

Being an entrepreneur at heart, Lynne left the corporate world and purchased Happy Tails Kennel and Starr Stables in Howell, NJ. She was finally able to follow her passion of working with dogs and horses. She owned a menagerie of animals including two Dobermans, a Pharaoh Hound, a Gypsy Vanner and two Tennessee Walking horses. After working seven days a week, 365 days a year for many years, she realized the physical work was taking a toll on her body. She sold the businesses that she loved and opened Just 4 Pooches, a dog boutique in Cranford, NJ.

Just 4 Pooches sold natural, holistic food, treats, supplements, toys, and apparel for dogs. The boutique specialized in hard-to-find items and USA made and sourced food and toys and won many awards for outstanding customer service, giving back to the community, and the prestigious preservation commendation from the Cranford Historical Society. Working with the Humane Society, Lynne was integral in getting an ordinance passed in Cranford, NJ that restricted the retail sale of dogs and cats to those coming from shelters or rescue organizations. Lynne continues to work endlessly on shutting down puppy mills throughout the United States and volunteering with various rescue groups.

After 10 years of operating Just 4 Pooches, Lynne was growing tired of the cold winters of NJ and relocated to sunny, beautiful Sarasota. She worked for a traditional veterinarian but her views on nutrition and healthcare were in direct opposition to those of the hospital. It was then that she met Dr. Jaime Gonzalez and was able to work with a veterinarian with similar values and beliefs. She complements the work of Dr. Gonzalez  with her extensive knowledge of alternative canine and human nutrition.

Dr. Gonzalez will provide holistic advice and guidance to the co-founders during this endeavor.

Lynne continues working for the holistic veterinarian remotely while simultaneously assisting customers at Canine Biome with nutritional counseling and testing.  Her veterinary background has proven to be an invaluable resource in curating supplements and remedies for the boutique.   Additionally, Lynne recently completed  the North American Veterinary Community’s (NAVC) Veterinary Microbiome certification course.  She owns two rescued sighthounds:  Santino, a cirneco dell-etna, and Tiramisu, a hunting podenco from Spain.
